What is the meaning of leather straps in the hadith?

                          I came upon this quote and don't understand the meaning of it. The translation and commentary are even more confusing. Please help: 

> The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: The eyes are the leather strap of the
> anus, so one who sleeps should perform ablution.
